Mark Fedor (fedor@psi.com) Cooper [Page 10] Internet Monthly Report October 1992 ISI --- GIGABIT NETWORKING Atomic The ATOMIC project has installed two SPARCstations on the ATOMIC LAN. ATOMIC SBus device driver and kernel development has been completed. The single SBus card supports two parallel input and output 320 Mb/s host channels that feed into the two incoming and two outgoing 500 Mb/s network channels. The Address Consultant has been extended to recognize the SBus host interfaces. Work on implementing multicast in ATOMIC has begun. We will first explore using the processing and storage capabilities of the Mosaic chips to create an intelligent spanning tree. Preliminary investigations of the AT&T 41mm series differential drivers have shown them to be capable of driving 25-pair twisted phone cable for at least 25 meters with negligible loss in margins down to 9.5ns pulses. Loss of margin and pulse shape occurs rather abruptly for shorter pulses. Insertion of two 25-pair standard connectors had little noticeable effect. Driving two neighboring pairs simultaneously demonstrated little coupling. Preliminary investigation of a 10m-to-kilometer range fiber-optic ATOMIC cable was begun. The basic design of the transmission end appears simple and has been decided. The HDMP 1002 transmitter part allows direct mating of an asynchronous channel, such as Mosaic provides, to a synchronous fiber-optic channel. The reception end will be investigated in November. Reception is considerably more complex due to the constraints of 600+ Mb/s synchronous data reception and simultaneous equivalent scan and reinjection of the packets back into ATOMIC/Mosaic channels. The fiber-optic cable would transmit over a distance that precludes use of Mosaic channel byte-by-byte flow control. Thus the ATOMIC fiber-optic channel must implement flow-control. We will most probably use an in-band variant of TCP's windowing mechanism. As a background task we shall begin investigation of the OFC safety circuit necessary to achieve Class 1 certification for fiber-optic installation into office environments. Various performance tools were converted to work with the latest version of the ATOMIC kernel. In user level performance testing, using TCP to transfer 10 million data bytes per transfer using Ethernet max-MTU sized packets (1500 bytes), between two Cooper [Page 11] Internet Monthly Report October 1992 SPARCstations, a rate of 9.2 Mb/sec was achieved over the ATOMIC network, compared to a rate of 6.6 Mb/sec over the Ethernet. Unfortunately, this points out all too clearly the architectural faults of the hardware and kernel designs. ATOMIC can deliver 300+ Mb/s of payload to the SBus interface host memory, but the architecture and stock kernel software precludes actually utilizing more than 3% of that. This time we will try to transmit two simultaneous channels of audio and video during the working group breakout sessions, and we may be able to demonstrate a return video stream to IETF. We are assisting BBN in preparations for a demonstration of the Synchronization Protocol they designed, through discussions of how ISI's packet multimedia teleconferencing programs should be modified to incorporate the Synchronization Protocol, and in a distributed performance of multi-part music synchronized using the protocol. Eve Schooler completed the paper, "The Impact of Scaling on a Multimedia Connection Architecture", which will be presented at the Third International Workshop on Network and Operating System Support for Digital Audio and Video to be held in San Diego, CA, November 12-13. T1's will be terminated in the phone closet on the correct floor only. It will be the customers responsiblity to extend the T1 to the equipment on that floor. GTE further said in the future all of the in house wiring will be the customers responsibility. The telco wiring will stop in the basement wiring closet. Our PacBell representative confirmed that they too will be making similar changes of their line installation responsibilities. Neither phone company has said that with this reduced service that installation costs will be reduced. Walt Prue (Prue@ISI.EDU) NEARNET (NEW ENGLAND ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH NETWORK) --------------------------------------------------- As of October 28, 1992, NEARnet has grown to 174 member organizations. With the receipt of this information the NNSC will create a repository of documents and informal comments on policies and procedures issues. This project is being done as an effort to learn how administrators at colleges, universities, K-12 schools, libraries, and museums can guide their users to make the best use of the Internet while at the same time avoid common difficulites. To submit documents to this repository, send mail to: pol-proc- doc@nnsc.nsf.net. To participate in the new policies and procedures mailing list, send mail to: pol-proc@nnsc.nsf.net. To join this mailing list, send mail to: pol-proc- request@nnsc.nsf.net. The NNSC Staff will send an announcement to the policies and procedures mailing list when the anonymous FTP directory has been updated with the first results of this project. Cooper [Page 15] Internet Monthly Report October 1992 The NNSC Staff has completely updated the Internet Resource Guide, including 84 new or updated entries in this new version. The latest updates to the guide are available via anonymous FTP at nnsc.nsf.net in the resource-guide directory and through the NNSC Info-Server. The guide is also indexed in the WAIS Server on nnsc.nsf.net. The NNSC Staff continues to receive and process hundreds of requests for information on connecting to the Internet due to articles published in the October issues of BYTE Magazine and IEEE Spectrum. Corinne Carroll NORTHWESTNET ------------ NorthWestNet held its Annual Meeting for member organizations from October 15-17. Over 200 persons attended including a substantial number (30+) from the library community. Keynote presenters included Robert Heterick (president-elect EDUCOM), Ken Kay (Computer Systems Policy Project), David Staudt (Division of Networking and Communications Research and Infrastructure at the National Science Foundation), John Waiblinger (University of Southern California), Ian Taylor (University of Washington), and Eric Hood (NorthWestNet). Keynote sessions focused on national initiatives, identifying challenges, and descriptions of major access projects. Afternoon break-out presentations were offered in four tracks: technical, user services, researcher, and navigating the Internet. Birds of a Feather sessions provided opportunities to discuss major initiatives for NorthWestNet and to establish working groups that will address these issues during the course of the next year. Overall, the meeting offered an excellent opportunity for attendees from distant sites to meet with each other, broaden their visions of the Internet, exchange ideas, and collect information. Since our last meeting in October 1991, NorthWestNet has grown by 27 member institutions including several K-12 sites, public libraries, corporations (for and not-for-profits), research institutions, and higher education sites. The diversity of new member organizations will benefit the region by building electronic communities working together to promote research, education, and economic development throughout the Northwest. Vint Cerf of CNRI discussed the "Criteria for Future Internet Protocol Architecture," and moderated a panel discussion on long term architecture options which featured Noel Chiappa on NIMROD, Peter Ford on TUBA, Paul Tsuchiya on PIP and Dave Crocker on IPAE. "A Unified Approach to Inter-Domain Routing" was presented by Yakov Rehkter. Merit/ANS organizational restructuring was addressed by Mark Knopper and Jordan Becker, who also teamed to provide the status report on the ANSNET/NSFNET. Route server/NAP experiments were discussed by John Scudder, Merit IE, and Enke Chen, Merit NMS, described backbone routing stability monitoring and statistics collection. The September NREN Policy Workshop sponsored by IEEE, EDUCOM and Computing Research Associates in Monterey, CA, was attended by Eric Aupperle, President of Merit Network, Inc. and Jim Williams, Merit Associate Director. Elise Gerich of Internet Engineering was Merit's representative to the RIPE quarterly meeting held in Paris, France in early October. While in Paris, Gerich met with representatives of EASInet, IBM and ANS to discuss the cutover of EASInet to T3. Gerich also participated on the INET '93 program committee meeting held in San Francisco. Jo Ann Ward (jward@merit.edu) Cooper [Page 19] Internet Monthly Report October 1992 SDSC (SAN DIEGO SUPERCOMPUTER CENTER) ------------------------------------- SDSC Network Activities ======================= We have installed a 4th NSC DX box on our FDDI ring. This new box will provide additional Ethernet ports. It will also serve as the keystone in splitting our FDDI ring into a building ring and a DMZ for network to network traffic. This is analogous to our current Ethernet structure. We have been actively testing our HiPPi Cray Sun connection via our NSC P32 switch. This has turned up several problems. The Cray software has been updated along with portions of the NSC hardware. We now have traffic flowing between the two systems, though a few quirks remain. We have done additional testing over the T3 between SDSC and NCSA. We hope to be able to publish some figures next month. Over the weekend of 20-22 Nov, we will be placing our Auspex file server into production use. During this effort, we will also be splitting our office building's single Ethernet into multiple segments. For a good portion of the weekend, many of our systems will be off the air. Our Cray and other major system will, hopefully, only be off between 8AM and noon PST, on Sat. This move will also cause some of our IP address to change. We will be adjusting our DNS server's timeout values to minimize the impact of these changes. Most of the new fiber through out the building has been pulled and some of the equipment installed. The first portion to be operational will be the new Ethernets over fiber to support the Auspex. This will be followed closely by FDDI on each floor. As I mentioned before, we have taken our Ultra hub out of service. After a review, we have decided to sell it as it no longer fits in our LAN plans. Over 230,000 external mail messages were process through SDSC's gateways. This is 7% over last month. The growth in mail passing through the SDSC gateway is growing at 60,000 messages a year. Some stats follow. This system has a pair of Ethernet interfaces. One is on our Ethernet DMZ, the other on CERFnet's local backbone. Cooper [Page 21] Internet Monthly Report October 1992 SDSC has been awarded a grant by NSF to establish a connection into the ATM network service being provided to DOE & NASA by Sprint. This is part of a planned commercial offering and is expected to be in place at SDSC by Spring.
